Study in Scarlet was the book that
introduced Sherlock Holmes to the world. Sherlock Holmes is
a “consultive detective” (in his own words). He use the art of deduction
and reasons to find answers to some of the most difficult cases presented to him, by various clients. The
book gives a good description of Holmes through military veteran Dr. John Watson. He looks
for a place and end up sharing apartments with Holmes.
Holmes is far from the boring detective with a green coat
and a large magnifying glass. He looks more like Robert Downey Jr.
character from the Sherlock Holmes movie from 2009. Watson describes him
as '' rather ocer six feet, and so excessively lean that he seemed to be
considerably taller. His eyes were sharp and piercing,..., and his thin,
hawk-like nose gave his whole expression an air of alterness and decision. His
chin, too, had the prominence and squareness which mark the man of
determination.''
Watson writes a list of Holmes knowledge, which
I'll repeat here shortly: Holmes has no knowledge of literature,
philosophy, or astronomy. He has little knowledge of politics, and
varying knowledge of botany (with a lot of knowledge
about opium, belladonna and various toxic). A good
deal of practical knowledge of geology (he can by
looking at soil spots on a person's shoes tell where in the city he has been). Holmes is very familiar with anatomy and chemistry, and
reads a lot of “ sensational literature”. Besides this he plays violin,
boxes, and is good with fencing and has practical knowledge
of British law.
This is Sherlock Holmes, originally described by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
From this rich personality there have several comic books, television
shows and movies been made. Some have portraited him well, others
have not been able to capture the personality . The most eccentric Holmes so
far is from the TV series Sherlock from 2010, Portrait by Benedict Cumberbatch.
In December, Sherlock Holmes, A Games of Shadows, is hitting the cinemas. 'Till date Robert Downey jr. is one of the best Sherlock holmes :-)
